TRACK DEDICATED TO OCCUPY MOVEMENT PROTESTERS

(Washington, DC) — Thievery Corporation has released “Unified Tribes,” their new single and video featuring acclaimed MC and Def Jux alum Mr. Lif. In the spirit of their last collaboration, Culture of Fear, “Unified Tribes” is another sonic molotov aimed straight at the belly of the beast.

“This song, ‘Unified Tribes’ is our attempt to offer inspiration, energy, and hopefully a morale boost to the Movement as it will take persistence and resilience to bring about change to the collective consciousness of our culture,” explains Mr. Lif.

“We’ve been so fortunate to link up with Mr. Lif,” says Eric Hilton. “He has a revolutionary spirit in the purest, most humane sense; and the world needs more of his conscious approach to hip-hop.”

Perhaps a mutual appreciation is why Mr. Lif has been spending more time in DC with Thievery Corporation, working on his new material. His next full-length LP will be co-produced by Thievery Corporation and released on ESL Music in 2012.

Mr. Lif further elaborates, “My music has largely been fueled by a desire for increased understanding of human nature and the world we live in. The Occupy movement is important to me because it is the people’s massive response to the unsavory aspect of human nature known as greed. Occupiers have come together in an attempt to bring about better conditions for the many as opposed to the few.”

The debut album, Celestial Electric, from the new band project creatively titled “AM & Shawn Lee” was released on Sept. 6 on ESL. The band launched their tour last week, as special guests touring as support for Thievery Corporation and performing their own headlining dates. Later on they’ll join up with Fool’s Gold for a handful of co-headlining shows on the East Coast. Today they share two tracks from the album (cleared for posting) – one original and one cover song. “Somebody Like You” is a bright, shuffling love song and “Jackie Blue” is a cover of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils hit from 1974 – check out the original version here.

Celestial Electric finds L.A.-based indie-pop auteur AM and London-based groovemaster/experimentalist Lee pooling their talents to create a unique brand of electro-soul that achieves seamless pop perfection, while mining a startlingly broad array of stylistic influences. The resulting blend of heartfelt, warmly melodic songcraft and vivid, inventive soundscapes underlines the artists’ abiding love for all manner of vintage genres, encompassing pop, soul, funk, jazz, Brazilian tropicalia, Turkish psychedelia, and soundtracks and library music from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.

Celestial Electric’s sleek, boundary-pushing approach is reflected on such uplifting tunes as the insightful generational anthem “Dark Into Light,” the bittersweetly soulful “City Boy” and the hauntingly intimate “Can’t Figure It Out,” which merge irresistible melodicism with deeply distinctive grooves. Elsewhere, “The Signal” demonstrates the duo’s penchant for exotic, eclectic arrangements, suggesting an ’80s Bollywood synth-pop dance party, while the swaggeringly funky instrumental “Callahan” (named in honor of Clint Eastwood’s ’70s cop anti-hero Dirty Harry) conjures up a bracingly atmospheric vibe a la Lalo Schifrin, while adding a dollop of futuristic electronic melody. The twosome’s irresistible pop sensibility also drives their effervescent reading of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils’ 1974 hit “Jackie Blue”.

(Washington, DC) Renowned DJ duo Thievery Corporation will release a brand new live performance DVD titled Thievery Corporation: Live at the 9:30 Club on September 6. The concert documentary will be released through Fontana Distribution and available at retailers across the country. A digital version will be available at iTunes and Amazon soon.

In January of 2010, Thievery Corporation thrilled fans when they sold out 5 consecutive nights at local DC venue, 9:30 Club. The shows were filmed with vintage anamorphic lenses that created flaws and subtle characteristics (including creating flares as the light hits the lens), and have an otherworldly and abstract visual quality. The result is an intimate account of the band and a dazzling recording of one of the world’s most unique musical stage-shows.

Thievery Corporation returns to Morning Becomes Eclectic, the signature music show from LA-based public radio station KCRW, on Friday, September 9 at 11:15am PST. The performance will air on 89.9FM and stream live- both audio and video – on KCRW.com. They will also be featured on Last Call with Carson Daly during the week of September 19. The show will include performance footage from their September 9 show at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.

With over 1.2 million albums sold in the U.S. across 15 years of making music, Thievery Corporation released their sixth studio album titled Culture of Fear earlier this summer. The album has been perched at #1 on the CMJ Electronic Music Charts for the past two months. The Washington Post called the album “solid,” while Paste Magazine said Culture of Fear was a “true cultural melting pot of sounds.” Thievery Corporation continues to blend musical styles in their trademark fashion; space-rock jams lead to hip-
hop inspired grooves, airy down-temp trances and dub-reggae infused vibes throughout the journey.

Over the years, Thievery Corporation has become known for the carnival-esque atmosphere of their live shows, during which they bring out a 15-member live band of musicians and vocalists. Afrolicious brings musical treats for you to feed your mind, body and soul which mixes a love of dj and dance culture along with a passion for organic soulful live music from around the world.

With their first official release “A Dub for Mali” they have created a recipe that will satisfy diverse musical palettes, with elements of Afro-Beat and Disco brought together for ‘Thursday Night Kinda Swing’, Electro-Dub, reggae and down-tempo on the title track ‘Foolin’ and a funky mix of Malian blues, psychedelia and beats on ‘A Dub for Mali’ the ep is a reflection and a taste of the wide spectrum of sounds that have been cultivated weekly at the San Francisco based Afrolicious party, hosted by real life brothers Pleasuremaker and Señor Oz. Afrolicious’ debut features some outstanding vocal performances from Burkina Faso’s Yacouba Diara and Trinidad’s Fresh is Life; locked in percussion and scatting vocals of Baba Duru, tight horn work of Billy Magic and Aaron Lebowitz and the wicked slide guitar, funky bass and arrangements of Joey “Pleasuremaker” McGuire.

Produced by Rob Garza of Thievery Corporation the tracks were recorded in an improvisational atmosphere that helped capture the magic of the Afrolicious party environment, a place where magic might happen if you give it a chance.
